Although many schools have zero-tolerance policies in place for traditional bullying, they often lack clear guidelines regarding digital harassment—especially because online bullies rarely use school equipment. While you are updating your AUP to include use of electronic devices, be sure you include a statement in your code of conduct. Examples of Code of Conduct StatementsCalifornia School Board Association Policy on Cyberbullying A policy brief with considerations for identifying and stopping misconduct and determining limits of authority. Recommendations for writing board policies are given. Pasco County School Board Code of Conduct StatementThe Code of Student Conduct includes references to cyberbullying, unauthorized use of audio devices, and abuse of technology. [See page 8]. Garden City Board of EducationDefines cyberbullying in their code as "inflicting willful and/or repeated harm through the use of electronic text, threatening or harassing students or school personnel over the phone or e-mail, or using message boards to convey threats, derogatory comments or post pornographic pictures of students or school personnel."
