How to Set Facebook Privacy Settings

Many students don't realize that Facebook gives users a lot of control over their privacy.  Larry Magid of ConnectSafely.org walks users through a great explanation of the privacy settings available on Facebook.  If the YouTube video is blocked at school, use a tool like Zamzar at home to download the video tutorial as a stand-alone.

FaceBook Abuse: Lodging Complaints

Facebook provides report links for all content uploaded through a Facebook feature or application, as well as for messages received from non-friends. Users should contact the company through these links if they find something offensive on the site.

If for some reason you can’t use one of these links, you can email Facebook customer service through the form found on http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=419 under “I need to report someone for violating Facebook’s Terms of Use.”Facebook also provides a contact form on this page for reports of fake or impostor accounts. You can find this under “I need to report a fake profile or an impostor profile on Facebook.” Unfortunately, you must have a Facebook Account and be logged in to use it. So it's probably a good idea to set one of these up in advance in anticipation of such purposes. Once contacted, the Facebook staff will disable the offensive account as soon as possible.
REport Facebook Imposters

To report Facebook complaints about nudity, pornography, harassment or unwelcome contact, send an independent email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Facebook will acknowledge receipt of your complaint and begin addressing your complaint within 24 hours of receipt.  See the Report Abuse page for answers to frequently asked questions.

Unfortunately, Facebook does not have any other materials besides what’s on their Help, Safety, and Terms of Use pages but they are in the process of developing them.
