A Cyber predator uses the Internet to hunt for victims to take advantage of in ANYway, including sexually, emotionally, psychologically or financially. Cyber predators know how to manipulate kids, creating trust and friendship where none should exist.

Cybertipline
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children maintains the CyberTipline, a reporting mechanism for cases of child exploitation. Reports may be made online or by calling 1-800-843-5678. This site also provides manly links and resources to prevent predation.

*NetSmartz Real Life Stories
Scroll to the bottom of their site to find, "Julie's Journey, Amy's Choice and Tracking Teresa." Again, NetSmartz offers short video clip stories chronicling the choices of young girls who met face to face with someone they met online. There are accompanying lesson plans in the form of activity cards for both middle and high school. (grades 7-12)

Cybersmart.org
This comprehensive cybersafety curriculum includes a strand on “Safety and Security Online: Meeting People Online,” with lessons for grades 4-12.

The Katie Canton Story
This very powerful video from WebWise Kids tells Katie Canton's story and is excellent to use in class with students. When she was 15, Katie met a 22 year old guy in a chatroom and fell in love. Only after playing the game MISSING with her family, did she come to realize that "John" was an online predator. He is now serving 20 years in prison, after Katie worked with the police and turned in evidence against him. Katie has become an articulate spokesperson for Web Wise Kids and she speaks at school assemblies to advise other kids. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The way to stay safer is to understand the dangers and follow some simple rules to help you steer clear of trouble. Their *public service announcements are powerful to watch.

Kinsa Comic Book: Web of Deception [pdf]
KINSA has partnered with Nelvana to create a 16-page cyber-safety comic featuring characters from YTV’s hit show, Grossology. The original comic takes kids on an adventure into the underworld of crime (and slime!) while reinforcing KINSA’s Surf Smart™ principles. The comic was distributed in POP! Magazine in spring 2008 to over 300,000 students in Canada, and is also available for download here.

Think You Know Who You Are Talking To? [PSA]
The Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) is made up of police forces from around the world working together to fight online child abuse. Check out their PSA, "Think You Know Who You are Talking To?"
